The final complete season of HBO's remarkable Deadwood series is full of surprises and devastating experiences as the nascent, dangerous town prepares to join Dakota territory in 1877. As in the previous two seasons, the question of who will control the town's resources, assets, and people drives much of the drama, affecting all manner of relationships and alliances, often between the most unlikely people. The dominant storyline in Deadwood: The Complete Third Season concerns upcoming elections for mayor and sheriff of the mucky, gold-mining town. The real juice, however, is not so much between the individuals running for office as between two power brokers each trying to steer the results toward their own purposes. Saloon owner and Deadwood's puppetmaster, Al Swearengen (Ian McShane sustaining his brilliant peformance in the previous two seasons), works closely with incumbent lawman Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) on retaining the latter's seat. But Bullock himself has difficulty surrendering his penchant for taking unambiguous action and relying on few words, especially when he has to act like a politician and deal with people such as George Hearst (Gerald McRaney, playing the real-life father of William Randolph Hearst). Swearengen's rival, Hearst--a self-made industrialist who gained his fortune through mining--has every intention of overtaking Deadwood, with his eye particularly on the lucrative mine owned by Bullock's former lover, Alma (Molly Parker). (The violence Hearst employs to get to Alma's claim will stun many Deadwood fans.) Meanwhile, Bullock's old friend, Sol Starr (John Hawkes), runs for mayor against the feckless E.B. Farnum (William Sanderson), and tries to navigate through his difficult relationship with Trixie (Paula Malcomson) as she grows enraged by former lover Swearengen's manipulation of her and everyone else. Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) is encouraged to become a public speaker, telling of her misadventures with General George Custer, and she commences a lesbian relationship with Joanie (Kim Dickens), the saloon owner who is becoming increasingly despondent and suicidal. Bullock's relationship with his wife, Martha (Anna Gunn) continues to deepen and become more of an influence on him, Wyatt Earp comes for a visit, and a newcomer to town, Jack Langrishe (Brian Cox), an old friend of Swearengen, attempts to open a theatre. As expected, the season finale concludes with the long-awaited election, but HBO's decision to bring Deadwood to an end required creator David Milch to wrap everything up in a pair of two-hour movies. Still, The Complete Third Season is very satisfying on every level, and will always be, along with the rest of the series, a television landmark. --Tom Keogh

It needed. One. More. Season! |
Deadwood's third and final season was every bit as brilliant as the first two. Primary Cast, crew, and writers continued. They are all stellar.
This is a more nuanced season than 1 or 2. The tragedy is that this was their last season. Season one was filled with light and optimism. Season two was almost unrelentingly dark and grim. Season three the show really finds it's stride.
The story balances tragedy and comedy. The direction balances light and dark, big and small. The show continues to punch the teeth out of "TV Westerns" and kick-ass all over "Historical Dramas".
Deadwood was one of the most brilliant things ever to grace the small screen. It wasn't perfect, and it wasn't finished. But Jesu Christo, it was gooooood!!! |

Such a GREAT cast! The cast really makes this show what it is. The Third season does a good job on summing everything up, I would have liked for it to have been a little more intense at the end but what are you going to do, an end to a terrific show. |

IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE TO WATCH DEADWOOD. IT WAS VERY ENTERTAINING AND INFORMATIVE. IT GAVE ME A EYE OPENING VIEW OF WHAT THE OLD WEST AND MINING TOWNS WERE LIKE. THE WRITNG SEEMED TO IN TUNE WITH THE PERIOD OF TIME. I LOVE THE CHARACTERS OF BULLOCK AND AL. THEY WERE NORTH AND SOUTH BUT CAME TOGETHER WHEN THE FUTURE OF THE CAMP WAS AT STAKE. SINCE WATCHING I HAVE RESEARCHED MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DEADWOOD. |

Such a pity this was cancelled |
This last season ends with everything hanging in the balance: Hearst appears to be taking everything over, Bullock and Swearengen are allies and perhaps even friends. Meanwhile, all of the minor characters continue their crises on their own scale, from the doctor becoming a "lunger" to the murderous rages of Sy. The most amazing thing - that climax and resolution are not even contemplated - is explained only by the expectation that a next season was going to get even better. Well, so much for the best laid plans! We are left with the best ending there could possibly be: that things will continue like this, never finding any equilibrium to the struggle for power and dominance, with tradeoffs so unspeakably evil (e.g. the precondition for Trixie's survival) that they can never be justified, and the hope that the moral few will have their day, even though the elections are thrown.
The action and acting are as outstanding as ever, the surprises never stop coming. The only thing that leaves the viewer with is the hunger to learn more through history books and the many novels of the era. I suppose the series returned me to my childhood fascination with cowboys, but with the modern sensibility and cynicism that we have gained as adults in an AMerica that we can no longer claim innocent. I will watch this series again and again, I am sure, to savor its subtleties and complete the brief glimpses of character in my own imagination. That is artistic success at its highest, and I am astounded that it has made it to TV.

DVD was fine, but the shipping was a rip off! |

I purchased the complete third season of Deadwood, the Set was new as stated and I am happy with the product, I am however not happy with The shipping charges. I was eligible for free two day shipping if I spent over a certain amount, and I did. But they make you pay the full amount including shipping charges and then want you to go back after the fact and remove the shipping charge? it's very confusing, not user friendly And did not remove the shipping charge! It's like a bait and switch! I will not buy on AMAZON again. |
