Good value for a receiver to integrate HDMI blu ray and TV |
|
I purchased the Sony STR DH700 to use with a new HDMI blu ray disc player and plasma TV. It serves this purpose well, is easy to integrate with the other components, is straightforward in terms of using the different sound options, and setup my 5.1 speaker system automatically with sterling results. I'm not an audiophile; that said, I am blown away by the versatility of this receiver. Blu Ray discs are spectacular and music played through my ipod or from cd's is wonderful--noticeably better than that produced by my previous high end Onkyo receiver. The difference likely is a result of my never learning how to manually set up the Onkyo receiver. The Sony is much more intuitive to use, so, for someone like myself, who likes and can tell the difference but doesn't have the inclination to master the intricacies of a receiver's controls, this is a very good purchase. Also, the price through 2009hdtv, with free shipping, makes this receiver a very good value. |

There is no AUX input.
Saving and using radios stations was confusing at first. |

can't believe the price |
for just over $200, if you have other Sony products, this is well worth it for integration, it's really nice to have everything work from one remote.
I liked its auto sensing of the audio ouput, it found my "large" speakers (no name brand) and correctly configured it. It works well w/the Bravia TV and the remote is easy to use. AM/FM was nice, and it has SIRIUS as well (though I don't subscribe). Altogether handsome and well built, so far so good....
works well w/karaoke cavs player |

Good value, but some disappointments... |
I owned an earlier generation Sony STR-DE845 for 10 years, which worked flawlessly until something electrical finally burned itself out.
I bought the STR-DH700 because we eventually plan to upgrade our TV to an HD set of some sort and I was presuming that 7.1 would slowly begin to replace the 5.1 format.
Overall I'm as happy with this replacement as I was with the original, save for a few non-trivial items:
1. The power-up and power-down times seem inordinately long...and rather loud when the system finally clicks on; sometimes it can seem like a lifetime if you were in a hurry to see something.
2. The volume seems quite low overall; I have an excellent JBL surround sound speaker system and I'm at well over twice the volume setting compared with my old receiver.
3. There appears to be NO WAY to adjust the volume of the center, front-L/R, rear-L/R or subwoofer independently. I'm mystified because this was a handy feature on the STR-DE845. What gives?
4. Unfortunately, the lovely remote that comes with this receiver cannot control our not-so-old Panasonic Tau TV, and so we've had to ditch it and buy a really ugly universal remote that can't control even 1/4 of all the receiver functions. Boy was that disappointing.
But in terms of sound quality and flexibility it's hard to beat this price. |

If you have xbox, go for pioneer or onkyo |
I bought this receiver about 3 months ago. I am satisfied with its performance when it comes to watching dvd movies. I have three main gripes:
1. The auto calibration does not work as advertised.
2. It does not work with my xbox360, i have to connect it direct to the tv and then get the audio from the tv to the receiver. I have been told that if you want to connect the xbox direct to
the receiver, go for pioneer or onkyo.
3. The user manual is sketchy at best. |
