Good sound, bad DVD player |
We've had this system hooked up in our house for maybe two years. It was not too hard to hook up and the sound quality was great. I'm always sceptical of the DVD players that "suck" the disc in rather then having a slide out tray. In this case, I was right to be skeptical. This "top of the line" DVD surround sound system stopped playing discs about 2 years after purchase. It would suck the disc in, declare it was "reading" it for 20 seconds and then flash "DISC 1" and not play anything. If you left the disc in then it would flash "no disc." We then had to press eject multiple times before the player actually realized that there was a disc in and eject it.
We ended up taking the DVD player in to a local electronics repair shop who replaced the ENTIRE LASER DRIVE to the tune of $200. So much for a $900 quality DVD player. I've got a 6 year old Toshiba in my basement that still plays even the most scratched discs. Never given me a lick of problems.
Heartily disappointed in the quality of the DVD player in this system. Speakers: Good. DVD player: BAD. |

A great Surround Sound for an inexpensive price |
I purchased this surround sound which happened to be the floor model over 2 years ago at a CompUSA that was closing. I usually stay away from electronic items that have spent time being displayed because of the wear and tear that they get; however, I couldn't pass up the deal. This was exactly what I needed, inexpensive and plays Dvds and everything i needed was in one box; I didn't have to go around purchasing individual items (speakers, subwoofer, reciever, etc). And the best part is that the rear speakers are wireless so I don't have to run wires all over the place!!! Granted for being a floor model our system didn't come with a remote or a mic; however, we purchased a mic that was compatible and it was easy finding a universal remote that worked well with the fuctions of the surround sound.

The Drawbacks:
The subwoofer wattage isn't high but it's perfect for apartment living (I don't have to worry about bothering the
neighbors; although I have gotten a couple of complaints for my surround sound being too loud)
Limited amount of plugs (it would be nice to have multiple audio input jacks for the computer, ps3, etc)
The Dvd slot can be a little tempermental at times when inserting a disc; however, it's easily over come by
pressing the eject button prior to insertion
I'm not a stereo guru by no means; however, I am impressed with my family and I do enjoy watching an assortment of movies and playing video games and the sound quality is really good.

Another example of SONY at war with its customers |
If you order a DVD from Europe and want to play it on this SONY unit, you will find that you have wasted your money. SONY is in bed with the distributors and blocks your playing the DVD. This s not a legal block; it's just SONY in collusion with the film folks to diminish the value of your film collection. So be aware.
This is the same as SONY's decision to no longer support Cablecards in its TVs. This is so the cable companies can overcharge you for the scramble box which gives them much of their profit. The government mandated cablecards for the cable companies so the cable companies do support them but then the cable companies got collusive manufacturers like SONY to help the cable companies defeat what they couldn't defeat themselves.
You will be better to work with a more customer friendly company. SONY is not a good choice. |

Worth every penny on the price I have paid |
I have got this product for 440 + free shipping from 2009hdtv for last thanksgiving. It's still rocking. I would strongly recommend this. Some thing to be considered before you buy:
1)It's just 1080i
2)The receiver+DVD player is heavy
3) Setting up is not too easy
4) Hard to find volume control for sub woofer
5) Disc loading is very confusing until you find the correct rhythm |
