Customer Reviews for  'Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote Control'

Good device, but has a lot of flaws which have been corrected by its successors
I have used a Logitech 880 for several years now, since about 2005. I just recently replaced it with a Logitech Harmony One, after the 880 started going on the fritz.

The good: In typical Logitech fashion, this is a very solidly built, durable device. Its matte finish means that, after 5 years of use, it still looks basically new. It is full-featured and the Harmony software makes it easy to tweak settings to allow it to fully control all kinds of devices, including relatively obscure ones (in my case, a Samsung window air conditioner and a Cambridge Audio CD player).

The bad: The charging dock conked out after less than two years. The design of the dock is really poor, in that the charging contact points are too small and prone to corrosion. If I'd been less, er, imaginative, this would have killed my remote where it stood (I ended up buying a Chinese battery charger and replacement battery on eBay to get it going again). As for the remote itself, the design seems focused more on symmetry than ergonomics. It's very slippery in the hand and since the buttons are all flush with the surface one never really gets the hang of operating them without looking.

My 880 has finally started malfunctioning a bit - the volume rocker (which is probably the single control I use most) works sporadically, and sometimes the volume goes down when I want it to go up. This has motivated me to purchase a Harmony One, which seems better in every meaningful respect (though of course it's costlier too).

Easy Setup, But Lousy Execution
I've had this remote for about two years. I love the web-based setup for the remote.

The problems, though, far outweigh the good features:

1) As many other reviews have stated, the charger base is junk. The connection is too finicky and/or the remote is too light to really make a solid connection. The remote just rests on the charging contacts, it doesn't snap in to help hold a connection.

2) I've found the IR receiver doesn't always accept (or quickly accept) the signals from the remote.

I haven't given up on Harmony/Logitech, but I've given up on this particular model.

Harmony 880
This device is better than expected! Website and setup were easy to use, its functions and features are great. It truly replaces all remotes. I bought another for upstairs...

same problem as the remote it replaced
I ordered this to replace an identical remote, 2 years old. The last remote, the entire left side started shorting (?) so the volume down didn't work, and you had to press really hard to get the buttons on the left to work. The new replacement is starting to have the same problems with volume, a few months in. Clearly, a new generation remote is a better deal assuming they've fixed the problem. And of course, the buttons on this remote are pretty small, which make it awkward to use. However, the universal remote itself is just wonderful in terms of replacing all of your remotes, and the programing is simple.

Worked Great when it Worked...
I was on my third one of these. Bought it once, but got two replacements from Logitech. The battery would always stop charging and the remote would die. I now need a new one and bumped into this one. It's a great remote, but the battery charging is flawed.
