I needed to hook up a dvd/vcr player to my tv through a cable box. I purchased a dvd/vcr recorder through walmart with in line recording. Did not realize it would not work. Took it back and bought this one from amazon after reading the reviews. Works beautifully! I was tempted to buy another one as one man did according to the reviews. It is hard to find a dvd/vcr recorder with a built in tuner. I love it! |

The Manual, and instructions arent as bad as everyone says they are. I do have a technical background and do admit its not intutitvely obvious if you did not have the manual.
The tech support is excellent, US based, and picks up FAST.
I got this because I wanted to record TV shows on DVD re writeables instead of VCR tapes as I have had bad luck with heads going bad/dirty etc. Figured I would give DVD a shot. Usage is Multipe recordings and playbacks each day.
I didnt want to give into Tivo's bull subscription fee, and the cable company's DVR's are another ripoff. So this was the only alternative to a VCR. This does exactly what I want.
You CAN NOT tape two different shows at the same time, one to DVD and the other to VHS. Just in case any of you were wondering. You are either in VCR mode or DVD mode you cant mix the two. Though I have not tried it yet, im fairly sure it also wont allow for you to burn your old VHS tapes to DVD, though I will try and if I am succesful I will let you all know. The only way I think you can do this is if you use the line out from your cam corder to the line in on the VCR/DVD recorder, that will work.
I should also add one thing that threw me off was that the coax cable (non digital) is just a pass through. You cannot use it as a output signal to your TV as you would any other VCR. Its only good for tapping the cable. You MUST use an RCA/composite cable to output from the recorder to your TV. So my setup is cable connection to recorder (Coax), Recorder to TV (coax) and then also line out composite/RCA from TV to Recorder. So when I want to actually use the recorder I need to switch between cable and AV1. I hope this makes sense.
It takes a bit to buffer when the recording is over, but thats fine. I am used to the 'timer set' function that everone keeps complaining about ie their timer will not record their shows on standby, they must use timer set. I had another vcr that did that so I was ready for it. It is important to note though as most VCR's dont do this.
Only had it for 2 weeks so far so no Complaints. I got it refurbished and again, it came as good as new. I just hope it lasts. |

Great features on this unit, but complicated to operate! |
Have had this unit for a month or two. Puchased this unit mainly to record television programs on DVD. It works wonderfully for this. Has the built in tuner which is very nice. I use the Verbatim DVD-RW which is one of the brands recommended by manufacturer. Super clear playback picture on my Sony Bravia flat panel TV. Watching commercially made movies on this unit are much clearer than on my old Sony DVD player, probably due to the progressive scan and upscaling feature this has that my older player didn't.
I've used the VCR player/recorder feature mainly to watch my older collection of VHS movies. Playback from recordings made on the VCR are not very good. Guess this is due to old (VHS) technology on my newer (LCD) TV. I have used the VCR to transfer my old home movies from VHS to DVD. This is a great feature and worked very well.
My only complaints on this Magnavox are:
1) Complicated to setup and operate. I'm not a technical minded person and found this unit difficult to use. After using it for several weeks now, I am understanding its functions better. I would not consider this a simply plug and play unit.
2) Small buttons on remote, but I've read the newer version (mfg 2009) have larger buttons.
Overall I am very satified with this unit and would recommend it for anyone looking for a dual player/recorder at a reasonable price. You'll just need some patience and time when you first try to use it!

Magnavox 457 review |

I found the Magnavox 457 to be easy to set up, and easy to use, especially if you read the accompanying manual. So far I have found it to be a quality product, great sound and picture. I have not had the time to try dubbing from video cassette to cd ( I have a lot of old home movies of family now passed on, that I want to put on cd and save) but I have every confidence that this will do an excellent job. It is not easy to fine a combo recorder with the coax connections for cable tv, so this one has it all, and very much worth the selling price. I'm very happy with it and recommend it if you're in the market for a good combo recorder. |
