The DMP-BD65 employs the PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus. Developed in collaboration with Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory, this high image processing technology reproduces clear, vivid colors that are faithful to the original film. Panasonic's Blu-ray Disc players employ high precision 4:4:4 signal technology, which working in tandem with PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus processes each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the horizontal direction to compliment vertical direction processing. P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing for HD) is another technology that contributes to the superior picture quality of the Blu-ray players. P4HD processes more than 15 billion pixels per second and applies the optimal processing to every pixel. Panasonic's Blu-ray Disc players further utilize 16-level motion detection to categorize the image motion of each pixel into one of 16 levels; diagonal processing to detect diagonals and correct the pixels accordingly; 1080p up-conversion to up-convert content recorded in the 480i/p or 720p format to 1080p. This Blu-ray Disc player also provides 1080/24p output, reproducing cinema images from a Blu-ray Disc and DVD in their original 24p form with no need for conversion--enabling you to enjoy cinema images in the same format used in cinema with a 1080/24p-compatible TV. Intermittent network - seems like bad firmware - Aug 2010 |
Boot up to home screen was average. The menus were OK, but not intuitive or well arranged. The deal breaker was that the menus many times would stutter or completely hang up, and the player would only connect to my home network (wired) intermittently. Trying to diagnose by using the Easy Setup would sometimes fail at obtaining IP address, and sometimes at finding the gateway.
Picture quality was good, and upscaled DVDs looked great. I never got as far as attempting to play a Blu Ray disc.
Sound was good, I used the fiber connection. I have an older Sony receiver that decoded the signal with no problems.
We did use it for Netflix, which was a great experience the majority of the time, but it did stop now and then to switch from HD quality to normal, or just to re-buffer. Do not know if this was due to the above network issue or just Netflix traffic congestion. I am on a cable connection that supports the necessary speed for HD streaming.
I did update the firmware as soon as I connected the first time. These issues were most probably just due to a bad rev of the firmware, but possibly bad network hardware. I did not have the time to troubleshoot through tech support, or wait for the problem to be resolved with another rev (if that is what the issue was) so I returned the player.
I have since purchased a Sony S370, which so far has exhibited no network problems, but I'll submit a review when I have had a chance to evaluate it more thoroughly. |

Returning Unit |
I ordered this refurbished Blu-Ray player from Good As New Electronics, and received it August 20. Not sure what was refurbished, but for sure it wasn't the ethernet port as it failed to connect to my router with the cable, a CAT6, which was double-checked and tested fine. Panasonic Support said to send it back for replacement so I'm going for it, although shipping and insurance on the return is on me. I'm sure I'll give it 5 Stars if everything works.

Does everything I wanted well |
This is an excellent machine. However, there are a couple of things you should know. First, it does not have an output for a digital audio cable. It uses only an optical cable for digital sound output. If your receiver doesn't have an optical input you won't get surround sound. Of course it has the red/white cable outputs for stereo. Second, if you don't plan to run an ethernet cable from your router or computer, then you should be looking at the BD85 which is wireless. In my case I had to run a 100 ft. wire from upstairs, to under the house and across, and drill four 5/8 inch holes in walls and floors. It was a dirty job, but worth it to be hard-wired. You can buy 100 ft. of ethernet CAT6 cable on this site for under $15. I use both NETFLIX streaming video and PANDORA radio frequently. Pandora is now up and running with the new Panasonic software update, which is very easy to get.
While it is always easy to pick at little things (for instance, subtitles takes about 4 or 5 button pushes on the remote, whereas on my old Panasonic DVD player it has a dedicated button). Nevertheless, I am tickled pink with my purchase. I have a 50 inch Panasonic plasma TV, and both Blu-Ray and upscaled DVD look great! Online Netflix movies are much sharper than I expected, with the HD movies living up to the designation. I also have no trouble getting 5.1 sound. In fact, it is the best I have ever heard from my system. |

I only have one complaint... |

Why why why why why why did Panasonic put the USB connection in front of the machine? This makes absolutely no sense to me at all--the adapter is big and ugly and in the way. One would think that the Panasonic engineers could have thought to place a USB connection in the rear of the machine, but I guess that was too obvious. Otherwise, it's a great machine (especially since it came free with my TV!). |
