So far so good |
Pros:
This is a pretty cheap yet quite versatile little player. So far no issue on playing all sorts of files. The firmwares are getting updated regularly by ASUS which is nice.
I also like the volume control on the remote since I don't have to hold two remotes every time. Buttons are not intuitive but reasonable and big. There are some linux hacked codes people developed that makes this box do a lot more than advertisement. If you don't bother anything, it still does a very good job.
eSATA port as well.
Cons: The box seems to be a little too big comparing to others, especially WDTV. I think they should put at least USB/eSATA in the back while putting those old composite on the side. It just makes too much space by putting USB attached storage on the side rather than back. In the future they need to get rid of composite completely and reduce the form factor dramatically to make it cheaper. |

Will not play newer HD formats of WMV's; freezes up occasionally |
|
I've had this player for about 5 months now, and overall I would recommend this player. Out of the box, navigating the menu was somewhat slow, after the firmware update, it sped up quite a bit. As far as Video and Audio quality go, you can't ask for anything more. Spits out 1080P/24fps flawlessly and does a surprisingly good job of upconverting on SD material. Every audio format (in video files only as I use this player strictly for) spit out via the SPDIF to an external receiver play and sound just fine. Playing MKV's from (YOU KNOWWW WHERE) is an absolute dream with this little box. There are only three problems that I've really run into with this player as follows: 1.) the occasional freeze-ups when navigating files or trying to fast-forward through a file. 2.) this player (with the latest firmware update as of the date of this writing) will NOT play the newer High-Def WMV files (like WMVHD9's, etc.). Player just says invalid file. 3.) Connectivity is somewhat limited (No coaxial SPDIF for older receivers and No component outputs for older HDTV's). This is not a problem for newer equipment though. The only direct comparison I can make would be with a friend's Egreat EG-R1. I think they may have the same chipset, but that player downright sucks. Warning: Stay away from those Chinese P.O.S.'s |

Perfect for playing all those rips! |
Pros:
- Plays all formats flawlessly as advertised
- Looks really cool
- Has a cool looking interface
- Really really easy to setup and use
Cons:
- Needs a 'full screen' mode (without the black bars)
- The aspect ratio thingie in the setup is kind of confusing. Works differently in different modes.
Overall, this thing is perfect for anyone who has a large collection of videos. |

Wouldn't play all the video files I wanted |
|
The product seems to be first class quality, but I was disappointed that it wouldn't play .avi files which I had saved on a hard drive. As it turns out I will have to convert the .avi files to MPAG2 files before they will run on the machine. That is going to cost me because I have to buy a video conversion program. I does however play all my Photo files just fine.- |

I cannot in good conscience recommend this Media Player |
I purchased this media player to read all the various .mkv, .avi, .mp3's, .mpegs, .iso, etc from my computer and external Hard Drive. I display them on my 1080p TV and get sound to my 5.1 Surround Sound System. The first few days it was great. No more trying to connect my computer to my TV or trying other methods (Xbox 360 anyone).
Then I realized that the music player is horribly built. They should just takes notes from itunes and build from there. As it is now its useless.
I update the firmware and lost 5.1 surround sound I had to reload the old firmware. Now there are MKV files that are marked as invalid and will not play. So I am doing the dance once more, converting these MKV's to .AVI or other formats.
Subtitles that are not hard encoded turn off mid movie so I have to turn them back on.
This is not a smooth working media player, it is not worth 5 Stars. Maybe they will put more time into the next firmware and fix all these problems. As for now I cannot in good conscience recommend this Media Player |
